Okay, but what's it really like?
"How to choose a Dojo," is a tough thing to casually write a blurb about.
Choosing a Dojo is personal.
The Instructors are important, of course. It's important to know what expertise level you can expect from them, or if you will be learning something you can actually use.
But the "dojo culture" they cultivate matters too. Sometimes, when you're a puddle of sweat and tears and frustration because you're doing a new thing that's hard to accomplish....sometimes that dojo culture matters the most.
You need Instructors and fellow students who enjoy your success as much as they enjoy their own...Who will fight to improve with you, and let you know that failing does not mean stopping.
You need to feel accepted and challenged. We don't do a lot of board breaking or kiai competitions. You will know you've done real work when class ends, and you'll know what you need to work on. And we'll be right there with you.
You need a place you're equally comfortable laughing, crying, swearing, singing, or sweating in.
You also need a place that will (lovingly) check your ego and reinforce the best in you...like how to be a good sport (and good human).
